About The Artwork

Marengo. The famous war horse of Emperor Napoleon was named after the Battle of Marengo. At the age of six, the stallion was brought to France from Egypt, and, most likely, this gray Arabian horse was bred at the famous El Nasseri stud farm. He, like all horses of the Arabian breed, was not tall, but was exceptionally hardy and reliable. The horse served the emperor faithfully, he was even wounded eight times. It was on Marengo that Napoleon took part in his most famous battles: at Austerlitz, at Wagram and at Waterloo. The horse even survived the difficult retreat of the French army from Moscow, but was captured in 1815 at the Battle of Waterloo and ended up in England. Marengo died at the age of 38, and his skeleton (except for two hooves) was preserved and is currently housed in the National Army Museum in Chelsea.
