Merleau-Ponty Painting

This is one of a series of portraits depicting people who have shaped my life. I started by painting on plexiglass acrylic sheets with acrylic paint and I discovered that both sides could be used. I found that the final painting was the result of many transparent layers that fused upon each other. This effect promoted an increased depth when compared to a regular painting, because it allowed to see from one surface of the laminate to the other. I think this way of representing a face honors the many layers that conform our own faces. The painting features a transparency that can be used to alter its display by changing the background or adding backlighting as desired.
