This painting is based on photographs and videos of updrafts and dust devils. They are my way of rolling around ideas before I make larger, more complicated works. Small works are done in a variety of ways. They involve splatters of paint, copies, transparencies, graphite, white-out tape, and an abu...

"Inspired by super-sized weather systems, Katie Stubblefield’s imagery is informed by forensic photography and first-hand accounts of nature in constant flux. Her works serve as a record of the visual aftermath of weather, discarded trees, knotted rebar, chunked concrete, mangled clothes, deconstructed architecture and disused vehicle parts, interwoven, tangled and refigured in space. These clouds of debris can take on an almost ominous tone. The artist’s passion for the forces of nature cut into the realities she invokes making her creations more a reckoning of awe than a reckoning of destruction." --Suzanne Walsh Katie Stubblefield lives and makes artworks in Long Beach, CA. She received her BFA at Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro, and an MFA at California State University, Long Beach in 2001. She is an adjunct professor teaching art survey and art vocational courses at Coastline College in Newport Beach, CA. Stubblefield is represented by K. Imperial Fine Art in San Francisco, CA; SCAPE, Corona del Mar, CA; and SALT Fine Art, Laguna Beach, CA. Her works have been included in exhibitions at the celebrated Ebell Club in Los Angeles; the Billy Jean King Public Library, Long Beach, CA; Carolyn Kleefeld Contemporary Art Museum, Long Beach, CA; San Luis Obispo Museum of Art, San Luis Obispo, CA; Jamie Brooks Fine Art, Costa Mesa, CA; Jordan Faye Contemporary, Baltimore, MD; and the Brooklyn Art Library, NY; among others. Katie has received both an Insight/Incite Award and an Individual Artists Fellowship in support of both her two-and three-dimensional works from the Long Beach Arts Council as well as a Kipaipai Artist Development Fellowship in 2025. Katie Stubblefield’s wood cut prints, oil paintings, sculptures, large-scale drawings, and sight-specific installed projects explore order, chaos, and entropy. Stubblefield’s imagery is informed by site visits, forensic photography, first-hand accounts, and evidence of changed/damaged/evolving environments caused by super-sized storm patterns and climate change.
