ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Having grown up in rural North Yorkshire and then studied in London, I have a strong appreciation of nature and for the beautifully ugly details of cities and industry. The battle for control between natural and urban landscapes is a recurring focus of my work. I am inspired by neglected walls where dirt overlaps in layers and plants live in the smallest of cracks. Lately, I have been combining harsh hand-made marks with more uncontrolled textures to explore this curiosity. In my work I want to celebrate the free, rebellious side to nature: the moss or ferns growing in a gutter that one day seem to be flourishing and then dying the next, the little things that change, the fragility of life in urban spaces.
