Mirage Painting

When I started this abstract painting, I may have been thinking of a high mountain lake, like the ones I used to see when I lived in Colorado. As the painting took shape, there was the suggestion of a mountainous landscape, with water at the base of the mountains. But then I found myself adding a mass of red, dripping lines - like heat waves. Hmmm, heat waves and a high, alpine lake? Eventually I decided it was a mirage - the illusion of an alpine lake in the heat of central Texas. But the truth is that this abstract painting was created by playing with color and shape, and the explanation only emerged later.
