As the temperature in Switzerland has dropped and the hard winter has continued. The surrounding landscape let me dream in my paintings. The white Japanese paper and black ink with its numerous nuances perfectly express the winter colours of nature.

Malgorzata Tohkou (東虹) Olejniczak Sumi-e Artist | Lecturer | Cultural Bridge Between East and West I am a Polish-Swiss artist and lecturer specializing in Japanese ink painting, known as sumi-e. My artistic journey has taken me across Europe, the United States, and Japan, where I regularly participate in both solo and group exhibitions. Awards and Recognition Over the years, I’ve been honored with numerous awards, including: – A Special Award at Le Salon Blanc at the Tōkyō Metropolitan Art Museum (2016) – Multiple recognitions at The Tōkyō National Art Center during international exhibitions of Japanese painting – A Special Award from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (2021) In 2022, I received my artistic name — Tohkou (東虹), meaning “Eastern Rainbow” — from Master Tohun Kobayashi, one of Japan’s most celebrated painters of the 21st century. This name is officially registered in the Japanese artists’ registry, marking a deeply meaningful moment in my career. Since 2017, I’ve been a proud member of NOHO M55 Gallery in New York City. Teaching and Cultural Engagement I teach traditional sumi-e techniques at renowned institutions such as: – Benediktushof Seminar- und Tagungszentrum in Germany – EKŌ-Haus der Japanischen Kultur in Düsseldorf – Kurszentrum Ballenberg in Switzerland – Propstei Wislikofen in Switzerland – Museum of Kraków in Poland – Cultural Center in Warsaw in Poland Sharing the spirit and philosophy of Japanese ink painting with students from diverse backgrounds is one of my greatest passions. Artistic Vision In my art, I use traditional techniques passed down by masters for hundreds of years. Preserving these priceless methods is very important to me. However, my artistic exploration also involves creating a new concept of sumi-e painting by introducing contemporary means of expression. Above all, the pure spirit and mindfulness I bring to my work, my spontaneity, and emotions flowing straight from the heart shape my artistic vision of the world.
