About The Artwork
We headed for the southeastern side of Peloponnese for a Christmas getaway in Monemvasia. The town was entirely carved on the backside of a sea rock in Medieval times. It was meant to be hidden from the mainland so that locals could avoid enemy attacks. It is a very clever trick and it reminds me of the Trojan Horse. The only way to reach Monemvasia was by boat, while later on a paved pathway was constructed to connect the castle entrance to the mainland. This is how the name came to be, meaning “single passage”. A new town has been constructed on the mainland, just opposite the rock. Walking around the cobbled streets was like a trip back in time to the Byzantine Empire.
