This work is acrylic, pencil, collage and screenprint on archival paper. It is float-mounted in a semi-gloss white frame. The dimensions include frame. I had been considering the unfortunate plight of horses used in horse racing and circuses. In this image a triumphant monkey grips a whip in one hand whilst he straddles a quadruped beast, yet the title is ironic. “Monkey grip” is a slang expression for the cleverness of holding something in one hand that would usually require two but this expression originates from catching monkeys. In this image both animals are in fact, caught up in the “grip” of captivity and exploitation.

Claude Jones is a New Zealand-born artist, whose work explores the complex relationship between humans, animals, and the natural world. Jones’s sculptures are curious crossbreeds of animal, human and plant, evoking the fantasy realm of children’s books, but with a sombre twist. Her use of narrative, irony and symbolism, invites viewers to re-evaluate their relationship with nature, and in particular, with other animals. With an art career spanning over 15 years, Claude Jones has exhibited widely. She has been the recipient of several awards, grants and scholarships, including 10 international artist residencies. Jones’s artworks are represented in public and private collections around the world. Claude Jones is a plant-eating pacifist who passionately believes in the emancipation of all innocent beings. Her artwork reflects this philosophy.
