About The Artwork

This stretched canvas was found in West Philadelphia. In it's original form it was a print stretched canvas of an ugly gold Buddha head with a sticker from the store ROSS for $49.99 I revamped it into an original acrylic painting by me. I gessoed the canvas ( several layers) and this painting is a homage to the painter Joan Mitchell. The leaves & foliage are inspired by her art- after seeing a retrospective of her fantastic abstract painting at the Baltimore Museum of Art in April 2022. "Monkey Mind" is a well -know term in Buddhism which refers to the mind jumping from thought to thought while one is attempting to meditate. I have studied meditation and Buddhism since the mid 80s. The painting is also a bit of a homage to Warhol and Basquiat. I have signed the front and the back of this huge painting ( an inch short of 5 feet in width and 2.5 feet in height). This painting is even more stunning in person. One of my favorite paintings I have ever created. Please note my art style is raw and funky. The sides of the painted raw and my style isn't neat or perfect.

Born USA. I started making art at the age of 21. I was admitted on the spot to the San Francisco Art Institute upon showing the Dean of Admissions my portfolio of Thurberesque Drawings with funny captions. Much of my artistic inspiration from my flea market finds ( vintage & rare ephemera), my huge unusual vintage, children's book collection, dance & burlesque performances, icons, symbols and images from all kinds of religions and my exploration into personal relationships. Although I have a distinctive style, I have explored many mediums- collage, painting, drawing, print making & fabric design, digital art. Some of my work is pretty and decorative but I also create ugly & raw paintings. These self therapy paintings are meant to be ugly and humourous . Kitsch, fashion, phtography, film, Children's art, German expressionism, Matisse, Dufy, Nolde, Redon as well as unknown outsider & folk+ art brut artists are have contributed to my style. My new website May 2022 www.katiepfeiffer.gallery As of February 2013, I have published my first children's ebook LULU LOOKS FOR LOVE which is available on Amazon. Old Website - www.katiepfeiffer.com 2019 Two month art residency in the Berkshires, MA and created a series of 30 paintings and drawings.
