James Water inspired this work. James spent his academic schooling at the U of Arizona, primarily studying ancient cultures such as Greek and Egyptian, as well as language, including Arabic. He traveled to Greece, and to Israel, and had a background in Jewish studies. In order to make this, his first figurative concept a reality, he asked me to paint according to his composition and to do a realistic study of the Michelangelo sculpture of Moses. The original marble sculpture had horns protruding from the head of Moses. James transformed the horns into emanating light, spiraling up into the night sky. He composed the dimensions of the canvas before adding in the placement of the figure, according to the Golden Section. When I began chose the palette of colors, I found that I liked the transparent yellow oxide, which when mixed with white, became an opaque oxide color. Since shadows are supposed to be transparent in some oil paintings, particularly classical studies, to give depth to the shadows, I played with this oxide depicting a sand sculpture, arising out of the sand dunes which led to the Dead Sea in the background. Mount Sinai is in the mountain range in the background, which is southern Israel. The turquoise of the water was made with pthalo blue and white, and the night sky was painted with Cobalt blue mixed with its​ opposite on the color wheel to create the sensation of depth and dark night.
