ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This painting is part of a series of "puddle paintings" in which I channeled the essence of the Pacific Northwest woods where I live. This work uses a lot of paint for such a small work and has a 3d presence. I hope that the viewer is brought to a visceral state of lightness when absorbing the painting and that it brings this feeling to their environment. My intention is to bring a sense of the outdoor world to the inside space in a very contemporary way.

For me, painting is an act that brings me fully into the present moment when at it’s best. I think of this bliss point as the ‘middle place’ where nothing but potential exists. I am visual artist who lives and works in Vancouver B.C. I have always made art in one context or another. I worked as a decorative painter running my own business, which lead to a career as a scenic artist in film. After starting my family I went on to train at Capilano University where I focused on printmaking and more painting. I received my BFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in 2012 and have maintained a steady art practice since then. I exhibit and sell my work in Canada and abroad. The paintings exhibited here represent a body of work that I have produced since completing my Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree at Emily Carr University in 2012. These paintings resonate with the history of biomorphic abstraction, although I have developed a personal method that allows each of the works to slowly evolve into a layered topography that represents both the exterior world and my inner terrain. Inspired by the British Columbia landscape and the urban geography that surrounds my East Vancouver studio, these works feature organic shapes and nature-derived palettes. Being an urban artist I often seek solace in the water, forest and sand of nearby lakes, mountains and beaches in the Gulf Islands and on the Sunshine Coast. This duality of place, urban and organic, frames my painting practice, as I find the common ground to be my interior state of being.
