These semi controlled landscapes are the product transferring accidental natural textures to paper. These experiments result in landscapes reminiscent of traditional Chinese landscapes which I created in response to my visits to the Yellow mountains. While small in scale the monochromatic blue-grey gives a larger sense of scale.

Mark Segal was born in New Haven, Connecticut. He received his BFA in Illustration from Paier College of Art and MFA in Painting from The Academy of Fine Arts in Perugia, where he lived for four years. While studying Italian culture and language, his interest in Chinese painting and calligraphy led him to learn Mandarin Chinese. Mark currently teaches art in China. From a young age, he took inspiration from and interest in drawing all that was in front of him. His painting of landscapes are the natural extensions of those roots in drawing. His use of water media shows traces of Chinese painting as well as minimalism. The work is a contemplation of space, texture and forms that weaves in between figuration and abstraction.
