About The Artwork

Ms. Understood Acrylic on canvas 30 x 30 inches 2018 Ms. Understood is a portrait of the iconic Nina Simone. Known as a talented musician, her genres included classical, blues, jazz and more. Though originally classically trained, aiming to become the first black classical pianist, Nina's music took a turn during the civil rights movement where she felt obliged to bring light to the importance of what was going on with her voice. The title Ms. Understood is in reference to the song "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and aims to highlight the vulnerability of Nina Simone. “ I choose to reflect the times and the situations in which I find myself. That to me is my duty and at this crucial time in our lives when everything is so desperate, when every day is a matter of survival, I don’t think you can help but be involved. How can you be an artist and not reflect the times? ” - Nina Simone This piece is finished with a matt varnish. I believe my work looks best away from direct light as it compliments the shadows and allows the subject to emerge.

Variety Brown is a London based artist whose current focus is portraiture. Her subjects are of inspirational and admirable Black Icons, their contributions ranging from Activism, Music, Sport, and Entertainment Industries. These pieces are painted on canvas using black and white acrylic paint with inspiration having been taken from black and white photography as well as to add a classic feel. Pride is taken in the contrast displayed using conflicting colours, highlighting shadows and light. Portraying an accurate and specific expression is also pursued. The end result is intended to display a strong and bold image that draws you in and furthermore sheds insight into the background of the icon.
