Mt. Pisgah Springtime Painting

Inspired by recent plein air hikes to Mr. Pisgah, this time from the East. The route goes through Pleasant Hill on route 58 and then turns left. The area is that of sloping farmland and the further one climbs up the hill, the farmland recedes into the distant mountains. Trees appear and soon one finds himself in the forest climbing still higher. Recommended hike. But getting back to the painting, this is a real genuine Jerry Ross painting. It contains almost all the elements of my approach, namely using line and mass somewhat equally to carve out, to model, the surroundings while paying attention to painting in the atmosphere, in this case, early springtime clouds and some stormy weather. But the overall effect is hopefully the calm of nature, the beauty and gravity of nature's appearance, without much embellishment. Yet it is only partially plein air, the rest is invention and imagination, after several recent hikes, capturing these moments. We take too much for granted. We really do.
