About The Artwork

This is an older painting from when I first came back to art a few years ago. I was trying different things in order to work out what I was and wasn't interested in. I had already established that the obsession with spatial representation I'd had ever since my student days was intact, but with this painting and others from about the same time a parallel to Paul Nash's "genius loci" was emerging; a desire to get under the skin of a place and to explore and communicate what it is to be right here, right now. In this case, being on Cooper's Hill at the end of winter is all about mud, slipperiness and slog. This does come through in the painting, but thanks to an unusual practice of mine (making an underpainting in a bright colour, in this case vermillion) it isn't as miserable as it sounds. This painting is in oil paint on box canvas. The sides of the canvas are plain white. It is 24" x 24" and is unframed. As with all my work, only high quality artist grade materials were used.

Alan is an artist based in Surrey. From his studio in Staines-upon-Thames, he paints landscapes, investigates whatever catches his attention and is currently prototyping some top secret & beautiful things. He trained at Farnham and has shown in many open and group shows throughout London and the South East, has had one major solo show and has been artist in residence for a manor house in Buckinghamshire. His work is in many private collections. “A high proportion of my work is the local landscape. Initially this was nothing but a combination of convenience and a long term fascination with the depiction of space, but as I have dug deeper it has begun to act as a proxy for more personal ideas.”
