ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The day after I returned from holiday, having visited some of the most beautiful beaches in southwest Portugal and having spent some invaluable and treasured time with only my three children, I felt compelled to register some of it on my canvas. Being an abstract artist, the idea was to paint what I remembered and then make it more abstract, but one of the beaches just appeared on the canvas, and I could remember so many details, that it felt a shame to "abstractify" them. What I saw brought back such good feelings and memories that I decided to leave it more figurative and looking at this painting just makes me happy. The title refers to the beach the painting is inspired on (Praia do Amado) and "amado" also means 'loved ones' (as in my children) in Portuguese.

Sandy Leslie was born in 1971 in Lisbon, Portugal, to a Portuguese mother and a Scottish father. Her work is mainly abstract, the process very intuitive and the result colourful, expressive, emotional and contemporary. It is Sandy’s choice of colours that most draw people to her paintings, followed by the freshness and naivete of her approach. She has started dabbling in figurative art and intends to further pursue this in an abstract manner as well. “Sandy Leslie is able to obtain both harmony and chaos in her paintings as she sublimates her emotions into colourful abstractions. Her paintings, rich in content both in colour fields, figurative interruptions and stroke styles, literally fills the canvas to its limits and keeps the viewer’s alert attention.” Eivor Winther Sunneson, Director at Drammen Museum, Norway.
