ABOUT THE ARTWORK

In this painting, I sought to capture the sense of space and openness of the Australian coast. Turimetta Beach is tucked away between Narrabeen and Warriewood on the northern coastline of Sydney. While it is an urban beach, due to its location and the wild rock platforms bookending it, it feels like being out of the city every time we visit. The currents always change its appearance - on some of our visits, all of the sand had disappeared after wild winter storms exposing the ancient granite, shale and sandstone beneath. On some visits, there are new rocky pools on the beach itself, and on some, all the rocks are covered by sand. The Narrabeen reserve is home to a lot of sea life including octopus, seahorses, some little tropical fish in the shallows and lots of sea birds - herons, shags and the like. It's a haven for for an ocean lover and painter like myself. This artwork was exhibited in my solo exhibition Far Horizons Jewel Seas in January 2021, Gallery Lane Cove.

Hello! Thank you for your interest in my art. I have been painting for as long as I remember. Though not formally trained, I engaged in artmaking throughout school and also completed a number of shorter courses while finishing “more serious” study at university. I have been working in academic, human services and research roles but always sketching on holidays. I have reengaged with my creative side in full when asked by a friend to complete a bespoke commission in 2020. I have not stopped since. Covid lockdowns had (amongst other less desirable effects) the unexpected benefit of giving us the time and space to reconnect with the things that nourish and sustain us. I have used this to full advantage and had my first solo show “Far Horizons, Jewel Seas” at Gallery Lane Cove on 19-30 January 2021. Since then I have taken part in a number of Drummoyne Art Society shows, of which I am a proud member. I have also won first prize at the Combined Art Societies of Sydney show in 2023 (watercolour) and got a Highly Commended for a watercolour at the Sydney Royal Art and Craft Show in 2023. What inspires me? Water and landscape have been a constant source of creative energy. Having moved to Sydney from Ukraine with my family as an adolescent, I have been drawn to the light, energy, colours and textures of the Australian landscape. Some of my art is an attempt to capture the sensation of immersion in nature, whether it be the power of the wave or the serenity of the Australian outback landscape. Recently I have been more focused on the challenges of depicting heritage architecture. I paint in acrylic and watercolour. I currently exhibit some of my smaller locally inspired work in the Hummingbird Sweet Things store in Wareemba, Sydney. I welcome commissions.
