Granville Street is one of Vancouver, Canada’s most well-known streets and is indelibly ingrained into the psyche and identity of its inhabitants. It is the center of the entertainment and shopping district that until recently was run down and seedy, rife with numerous sex shops and street level drug dealers. The street has undergone a rejuvenation of sorts as high rent establishments move in and slowly retake what was once the neon capital of North America but remnants of its recent past still remain within a tenuous mix of high and low brow tastes. This painting was created with acrylic paints, a medium I have used for many years as acrylics do not give off fumes and is generally a healthier medium to work with that doesn't impart the same long term health effects that some other mediums may present.

I am a visual artist who resides and works in Vancouver, Canada. I have exhibited my work both locally and abroad and have a lengthy exhibition history. My patrons include both corporate and private collectors. When I work, I combine bright colors with a loose representation which allows some elements of the paintings to skirt the edge of abstraction while a modicum of representation draws the viewer in to a referenced subject. Acrylic paint on either canvas or board is my primary medium but paintings often include other elements including oil and spray paint, pastel, graphite and a host of other materials at hand. These various mediums are applied with different styles of brushes, scrapers, stencils and rags; whatever utensil is at hand. I like to think the painted image stands above our hyper-accelerated culture and provides an opportunity for individuals to stop and consider, if only for a moment, what someone else is thinking about. In my experience the viewing of a painting, within the absence of the artist and presence of their idea, can be transformational. And it’s that opportunity, or potential, to create a painting that resonates with an individual in some unanticipated way that is ever so enticing to me.
