The New Village series is inspired by multiculturalism and the possibilities behind open source communities. The composition is modeled after open source information plotted on a graph and how the patterns of people, when charted, behave much like a botanical in nature. The idea of collaboration, and cross pollinating among thoughts and cultures is the driving force behind these works. This painting is created on a beveled panel. The edge of the bevel is painted a bright yellow so when the work hangs is appears to float and also emits a subtle glow of light. I prepare the surface with a modified fresco. This gives the work an enhanced surface quality that allows for nuances and texture. I render in acrylic, spray paint and casein. I allow the colors to work through each other, scrapping and sanding back in some places to give a nice archeology. This painting is inspired by symbols that range from ancient folk art to street. Patterns and colors are culled from different stations resulting in a multicultural and maximalist read. This series of work was selected by two museum curators for surveys of midwestern painters and exhibited at the Elmhurst Art Museum, The St. Louis University Museum of Art and the Evansville Museum of Art History and Science.
