ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Over the last few years I have been making a series of paintings based on a number of specific locations that have become a significant part of my personal geography. I begin to develop a deeper curiosity with a place when I feel I know it a little already, or it is evocative of something I vaguely remember. The paintings depict fragments of an idealised, post-modernist architecture that we can immediately recognize and identify with. The work explores the dramatic, geometrical shapes and structures that can be found within the urban environment. These places are far more than merely functional, public spaces; they form part of our remembered, shared significant histories. They resonate with the layered personal narratives of families and communities that have inhabited these places.

Paul Crook's studio is in Warwickshire, where he works as a fine artist/painter and lecturer in Fine Art. His paintings have been exhibited widely, both in the UK and overseas. His paintings have won a number of art prizes and have been included private collections. In 2020 he had a painting selected for the John Moores Painting Prize and in 2021 one of his paintings was included in the UK Government Art Collection. This year he has painting on show in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. These paintings have been selected from a series of works that investigate the idealised, post-modernist architecture that can be found in simple domestic settings or in a much larger urban context. These places offered a promising, beautiful and perfect future; a place for shelter, escape and happiness. The paintings attempt to explore what remains of this optimistic new world.
