Nightjar is an original painting on canvas. It is painted on a deep canvas, so can be hung directly onto the wall. This painting is part of my most recent "Hummingbird series". I used the Hummingbird as a title for the series, and felt it worked beautifully as a metaphor. I feel the paintings related to the feeling of stillness of the hummingbird hovering and floating ,whilst their wings are beating sometimes as fast as 80 beats per second. Similarly, the paintings have a calmness and stillness, but yet there is an intense frequency and energy underneath. I wanted to create paintings that have a directness. A calmness. A feeling of being content within themselves. There is a sensuality in their minimalism, and limited choices. This feels purposeful and strong. It is both powerful and singular, as well as being nuanced and soft. Both epic and intimate. I love these contrasts. I love the depth of the blue central colour. This is contrasted with little lines and pops of bright colour and metallics. The colours and marks all balance, and make a beautiful harmonious painting : )

Ele Pack received her degree from Loughborough College of Art. She now lives and works in the beautiful Peak District, in the UK. She has work in private collections in Canada, the US, Japan and Europe. She has exhibited her paintings both nationally, and internationally. Her work has been exhibited by various UK galleries, and overseas in Germany, Sweden and the US. "I believe that visual language has a potent power, like music or literature. And it has the power to lift, communicate and transform. Using pattern and mark to create rhythm, I use a range of materials; paint, pencil, fabric, collage, metallics, and build up my paintings in a very organic way. I overlay layers of paint, mark and collage to build up the pictorial space. This creates glimpses, hidden spaces, things half_ shown, suggested. I use delicate layers of texture, drawing and colour to create an ambiguous space. The image is then worked and re_worked until the image is “found”. Only when a balance and integration is achieved I feel that the painting is finished. I like to think of them as “visual poems”. This sensual world is one to be absorbed, felt, and enjoyed. "
