I find a lot of inspiration in my surroundings, whether its in my studio or outside in the big wide world, usually architecturally. The way colours sit: side by side, on top of one another by choice or default. Piles, stacks of colour combinations and a mix of textures. This piece is simply playing with piling colours on top of one another in line and block form. I love the mixing of crisp solid lines or blocks with more free formed broken ones. Neatly stacked on top of one another in a fun, simple yet dysfunctional way. The paint has been applied using ink rollers, brushes and a bit of free pouring so no tools at all, just the natural flow of the paint on the canvas. Lines have been aided with masking tape or my steady hand (sort of...depends how much coffee I've had). Colour palette: Varying shades of Greens, Turquoises, Oranges (Inc. fluorescent orange) and Lilac on a White painted background. My paintings are never an entirely flat/smooth surface. Layers and layers of paint are used creating natural lumps and bumps across the canvas, sometimes completely intentional and sometimes not. I use lots of different paint types, experimenting with texture and the final finishes you can achieve with each one. All 4 canvas sides/edges are finished with a white emulsion. The edges will not always be totally smooth, as there may be some lumps and bumps from paint that has run over the sides and some of the colours may still be ever so slightly visible. The name (Left) and number (Right) of the artwork is handwritten on the back of the canvas on the top stretcher bar, not usually visible. Just lift up the bit of canvas below the staples and there it will be. *Please note: There are no fixings in place for hanging, nor do I supply these. This is up to yourself the buyer to decide and execute depending on whether you want the artwork to hang in situ framed or un-framed.*

Sophie Gradden is a Contemporary artist born in Buckinghamshire. Home & studio are based in Deptford - South East London. Successfully completing her Art foundation in 2004 at the University of Gloucestershire going on to further her studies at Bristol UWE in a degree of Fine Art. Not completing her degree due to pursuing a career in interior design, her art skills were not lost, just tucked away for a while. In 2016 Sophie reignited her love for painting and set up a makeshift studio in her home and began creating, whilst working full time. Exposing, for the first time, her artistic world to the public at Windsor Contemporary Art Fair. Since then, the art continues. In April 2018 a decision was made to dedicate herself to her art full time, no more 9-5, just painting! Inspired by colour & shape. Creating textures, layers, a juxtaposition of clean/ordered/solid with undefined/chaotic/broken areas. Bold striking colours, complimented by muted tones that capture and disarm the viewer. Preferring the medium of a Acrylic, Sophie also loves to experiment with household emulsions, spray paint, chalks and pastels.
