About The Artwork

I went to school hungry with no food and no plate and I was turned away during the feeding time. My mother was not home and I did not know what I was going to eat. That incident encouraged me to create this art and also motivated me to give a percentage to a ladies organization from my village that feeds hungry children.

Nombeko Mafenuka started drawing at a very young age. She is originally from the Eastern Cape in a small village of Tsomo, in the former Transkei. She grew up in a very disadvantaged community and they didn’t have any proper drawing material. As a child she used to draw on rocks and on aloe plant leaves. She currently lives and works in Cape Town as an arts educator and an artist since the early 1990's. She has been doing art since she was in high school. She has sold her work around the world.
