The woman in this painting has experienced a lot of pain and prejudice in recent times. And even though she looks strong and beautiful she feels fragile and fragmented...I tried to capture this by using soft pink and blue tones in strong contrast with the really dark shadows. By using a roller instead of paint brushes I can achieve an almost pixelated and fragmented effect which helps me to express her state of mind and also how she feel like she is being perceived - almost merging or disappearing into the background.

As an artist, I have a fascination for the nature of surfaces and mediums and the endless possibilities their interactions and qualities can reveal. Having studied Art at the Technicon of the Orange Free State, majoring in Print Making and Ceramics, my painting style is self-taught. I recently changed my approach to my painting style by using larger brushes and rollers; this initiated some remarkable changes for me. It forced me to simplify and lessen the number of strokes I make, and stopped me from getting caught up in trying to create every little detail. My aim is to give the viewer just enough information, and let them fill in the details. I focus my painting on vibrant and energetic, Urban Portraits that capture the emotional characteristics of the subject. I believe that art is a great tool for empathy. Empathy is the ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes, and to get a better understanding of what they are thinking or feeling. It is the key ingredient in creating successful relationships. Empathy reduces prejudice and racism, decreases bullying, encourages us to help others, and promotes mental well-being. I believe a work of art can evoke those powerful emotions. The colour palate, the textures and the subject matter can all cause an immediate emotional response. I deal with self-worth, egotism, and the need to keep up with modern society by drawing attention to the similarities in us all, while also focusing on the different stories one picture can tell. A work of art that cultivates empathy helps people become more aware of their own emotions, and more receptive to the emotions of others.
