About The Artwork

This painting continues interest in a flux of back-lit forms occurring predominantly towards the extremities of a large, square-format canvas, as pursued in previous works. The central area of the work again is not the main focus of drama, though a little more detail has crept in. Fluid acrylic paint washes over and envelops more defined forms, revealing thick, self-levelled textures and underlying layers. The composition has been allowed to materialise as naturally as possible, with minimal conscious orchestration or contrivance. Variations in surface quality, the undulations and ripples of paint, the sheen, plasticity and relative translucency etc. are all deliberate considerations in establishing a unique physical presence that is not readily translatable in a photograph. The painting makes use of the highest quality Golden Acrylic paints and texture mediums on heavyweight (15 oz) cotton duck canvas and bespoke box-profile stretcher bars. It is finished with a removable, semi-gloss, solvent acrylic varnish, over the top of an acrylic isolation coat and appears unframed with wrap-around paint edges.

“My paintings come from a place inaccessible to my analytical mind. They are the fruits of a root system hidden from view. A kind of sensual arousal stirs me into action and dictates the course of the work thereafter. I listen to what my inner voice whispers and try to respond as spontaneously as I can, without thought to much else. Through my years of experience pushing paint around, I have discovered it is really only this that works and now I trust to the process implicitly. Blind faith in tackling the demands of the moment is required, which can be both exhilarating and unpredictable, but the only way to further the work is to optimize one's relationship with the life within. Identifying and exploring a specific subject is not so important, since anything could be considered worthy of attention, but being true to what one loves is everything. Openness, participation and sharing the thrill of being alive to it all, is what matters most and conveying it as honestly as possible.” © Andy Hill 2018 www.andyhill.art
