About the Artist

Marcello Ruggiero develops a research-based artistic practice exploring the fluid relationships between sound, image, perception, and visceral experience. Painting constitutes a central pillar of this investigation. Alongside an independent international career—marked by honors including the First Prize at the Ilford Awards and exhibitions at Gammelgaard (Denmark)—his painterly practice has evolved as both an autonomous body of work and a structural component of his larger research-based projects.
Working across abstract expressionism and experimental mixed media, Ruggiero’s paintings investigate layered surfaces, atmospheric depths, and profound material tension. His compositions carry the residual echoes of his large-scale installations and sonic research; the physical mark-making on paper and canvas functions as a silent cadence, capturing the frequency of sound through visual weight. Color, rhythm, and structural proportions are examined as interconnected visual systems, masterfully balancing acoustic silence, psychological instability, and heavy spatial presence.
Ruggiero was a resident artist at the Museum of Image and Sound (MIS-SP), a pivotal tenure that further solidified his rigorous approach to multidisciplinary structures. Ultimately, his work remains open to multiple interpretations, inviting the viewer into a deep, meditative engagement with the medium.
