About The Artwork

Sometimes, I like to tease the viewer by including an unexpected visual image. Here, it's tiny trophies in the eyes. I painted those trophies to express every athlete's dream, a tangible example of success. The hand covering the mouth represents the stifling of truth that prevents people from correcting wrongs to reach their goals. Silence and indifference about injustice and cover-ups can never lead to change.

Born in South Korea, I came to the U.S. in 1995. I received 33 awards in painting, including the 2024 and 2011 Individual Artist Fellowship Grant in Painting from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, the 2018 Spring Residency Program of the ESKFF at Mana Contemporary, the Best of Show & Award of Merit of 2004 from the Heartland Exhibition of the City of Merriam in Kansas, and the Len G. Everett Memorial Award for the Advancement of American Art from Allied Artists of America in 2002 & 2008. In 2003, while traveling with a Xavier Gonzalez & Edwards grant from the Art Students League of NY, I joined the Cercle Artistic de Sant Lluc in Barcelona, Spain. My art has been shown at selected and invited exhibitions, mostly in public spaces, in over 120 groups, eight solo, and 2 two-person exhibitions throughout the U.S., Italy, Spain, Japan, and South Korea. My work has been featured in over 50 critical articles globally, including "100 Greatest Women Artists of All Time... So Far" by Arthur Smith in 2020 and interviewed by m-u-s-e-u-m.org/shinyoung-an. I was invited to be the figurative artist of New Jersey by "Figure 50" in 2013.
