About The Artwork

This is an unframed oil painting on canvas. It is wired and ready to hang. The "script" on the canvas was made with oil sticks. The work may have been influenced by Deibenkorn , in terms of blocks of color. There is an intentional tension in the painting between the large flat block of color that suggest landscape and the somewhat thin disappearing "roots" at the bottom of the painting. That tension is meant to suggest ambiguity. The script references the work of Twombly. The painting is based on a memory of being lost in cornfields or wheat on a sunny day with my father. I was so small that I could not see over the growth. My father carried me on his shoulders until we could find our way to the road. Of course it seemed like hours but was probably a few minutes as the sun poured down and the light was glistening. I hope that the viewer feels a sense of joy and hope and feels that sense of the warm enveloping sun and safety. I hope that the viewer may pause to remember something in their father daughter relationship that evokes positive memory. I work abstractly. I wanted to create a sense of place, atmosphere and emotions. In working in large simplified forms and blocks of color that might seem like a child's drawing. I used colors that would evoke heat, pleasure and joy. The final part of the painting is the "writing". It was used in part for compositional reasons, but in truth was an intuitive gesture that seemed right. I love the "script". It creates an ambiguity in what might be experienced as a more narrative painting, happy painting. This is part of a larger oil painting series all based on childhood memory and the nature of memory.
