This painting was produced during an artist residency at Trinity Buoy Wharf, London Docklands. This site on the River Thames has long views, expansive skies, turbulent water and shifting light, providing a wealth of visual sensations and imagery. It is primarily the sensation of light, space and movement in landscape I wish to create rather than evoke a sense of place. I enjoy working with acrylic paint as it dries quickly and enables me to build up a series of opaque and translucent layers. The smoothness of the wooden board helps the paint to glide over the surface giving a very flat surface once dried.

Work Statement In this age of instant gratification and constant distraction it is difficult to be fully present in a place, process or moment in time. And yet it is this feeling of total immersion that I strive for through my art. Time, preparation and planning needs to be given to get to a place both physically and mentally, where intuition, creativity and the subconscious can take over and I can be truly ‘in the moment’. Being immersed in a particular landscape can create a sense of connection that I try to rediscover later in the studio. I sometimes sketch from observation locally in Epping Forest or the Thames foreshore, other times I travel to the coasts of Cornwall and Kent. In the forest I take much delight in seasonal colour, light and shade created by the tree canopy and twists and turns of oaks. By the river and sea I revel in exposure to the elements, expansive skies, changing tides and turbulent water.
