A painting inspired by the South Dakota Landscape reflecting my interest in re-imagining traditional landscape painting through a very personal lens.

My choices were influenced by my awareness of climatic change, my experiences as an artist and farmer, and my earnest desire for our culture to see the importance of protecting and healing our environment. The title is inspired by a local news story and the political environment of the state I live in.

Topsoil and iron filings have been mixed with the paint giving the paint greater presence on the canvas. These additions to the painting's surface can be thought of as a part of my process giving content to the painting, or as an aesthetic device creating texture to be appreciated on a purely visual level.

A couple images highlighting the texture on the canvas and a photo of the signature which is on the side of the paintings support.

Paul was born in Viborg SD in June of 1967. Growing up on a farm in Southeastern SD has given Paul an intimate understanding of rural life and a unique perspective as an artist. Viewers of his work will not only perceive a sense of place but will also experience the complicated and sometimes contradictory feelings many rural residents experience over their lifetimes. The paintings are colorful, emotionally autobiographical and mirror the artist's feeling of connection to the land. Paul lives in the Black Hills of South Dakota with his wife and daughter. He is adjunct faculty at BHSU and when he is not teaching or painting he can be found playing guitar(sometimes singing) at local restaurants, bars, churches, coffee shops, festivals etc....
