The idea of an onion grenade has been going around my head already for a while. In Taiwanese Mandarin, when we want to warn someone about a movie or TV program that will make you cry, we say that it has “onions in it”.

But of course, you don’t always have someone who will warn you. Then you get hit out of nowhere by an onion grenade.

With this image in my head, I stumbled across this quote: “Imagination is the only weapon in the war against reality.”

Now, the funny thing is: according to 2.2 million search results in Google, this is a quote from Lewis Carroll’s
Alice in Wonderland. But that’s wrong, which you can easily check by searching the full text of Alice in Wonderland online.

Thanks for nothing, Internet!

So, I have no idea who said this, and what kind of war against reality they may have been fighting. But it put a really strong image in my head. Imagination really is incredibly powerful.

Imagine a war that was fought with onion grenades. Tears would be streaming down the faces of soldiers. Those who cry the most lose the war. But they stay alive! This is further proof of what your Mom has always told you: vegetables are healthy.

My art wants to put a smile on your face. All of my paintings tell a story, and every story has a little twist. You'll have to look closely: details matter to me. I was born and grew up in Taiwan, and moved to the Netherlands in 2014, where I am again living now after a 2-year stint in San Diego. You can check out my Instagram for a mix of work in progress and snapshots of my life with husband and cat.
