About The Artwork

"Opening" acrylic canvas 150x205 2022 Yehor Antsyhin’s interest in documentaries appeared back in 2020. Then, he visited the Lviv City History Centre, where he saw footage of the opening of the monument to T.G. Shevchenko in Lviv in 1992. The monument was important for the history of Ukrainian culture, but the image of Shevchenko was distorted, exposed and exploited by the soviet authorities. A very symbolic history took place in Lviv with this monument. On August 24, 1992, it was opened, timed to the anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence of Ukraine, that is, it was the opening of the first monument to a cultural figure in an already independent country. Thus, this event created the conditions for the return of the image of T.G. Shevchenko to the context of Ukrainian culture. In 2022, the story is becoming very important to the artist. Because during the active phase of russia’s war against Ukraine, Antsyhin realised his nationality anew, and it seems to him that such mass self-awareness happened to many Ukrainians. The plot captures the moment when the monument will be opened in a moment, but it is still in a transitional state. In this way, the plot becomes tangential to the processes of national awareness in moments of severe and large-scale political upheavals.
