ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Australia isn't all red deserts and dry rock. The Otway Ranges on the south coast of Victoria are home to a vast swathe of temperate rain forest, regularly watered by the rains that sweep in from the Southern Ocean. The day I painted this was squally but deep in the forest there was virtually no wind. The only clues to the racing clouds above the tree canopy were the shafts of sunlight rushing through the forest like the beams from searchlights, dramatically picking out details, and just as quickly moving away. This painting is on rough textured linen stretched on hardwood stretchers.
