“Ouroboros” derives from a Greek word meaning “tail-devourer.” The concept of the ouroboros is very ancient, used across many cultures as a symbol of cosmic harmony, eternity, and the cycle of birth and death. The earliest known ouroboros symbol comes in a 14th-century BCE Egyptian religious text found in the tomb of King Tutankhamen. The symbol appears in a passage about the origin of the sun god Ra through a union with Osiris, meant to illustrate creation through destruction. Norse legend tells of the great serpent, Jörmungandr, who encircles the earth and bites its own tail, which is depicted as a serpent in the shape of an infinity symbol. In this painting I wanted to use the human form as a way to express this idea, you will see an infinity symbol if you follow the figures. This symbol has always close to me, I always see it.

Mel Fiorentino, a renowned artist with a career spanning over two decades, skillfully merges Renaissance influences with contemporary art. Her passion for drawing and painting began in her teens, deeply inspired by the symbolism and existential themes of Renaissance masters. This classical foundation has driven her dedication to figurative work and portraiture, blending historical and modern elements to push artistic boundaries. Fiorentino's technical mastery and symbolic depth are evident in her celebrated works, showcased at prestigious events like the Epcot International Art Festival and sold globally, including at Disney Springs' House of Blues. As a master of oil painting, she meticulously mixes her own paints to achieve unique textures, creating a dynamic interplay of surrealism and realism in her evolving art. Beyond her personal practice, Mel is an ardent educator at her studio, Fiorentino Atelier, where she teaches academic art. Through the atelier, she shares her passion and techniques with students, contributing to the community through over 75 exhibits and events, including the First Friday Artwalk. Nationally and internationally recognized, with works in private collections worldwide, Mel continues to create and inspire from her Florida studio, leaving an enduring legacy in the art world.
