About The Artwork

Description I'm always curious what land homes are built on and how stable and for what length of time. Travelling across Iceland during an artist residency I was often amazed by seeing buildings and houses situated in very precarious positions. In these untamed landscapes, some have chosen to defy nature's extremes by building homes at the foot of volcanoes or on precarious mountain slopes. This audacious endeavor, seemingly playing with the edge of catastrophe, invites reflection on the delicate dance between human aspiration and the formidable forces of the earth. These remote abodes stand as testaments to both the allure of Iceland's rugged beauty and the inherent risks woven into the fabric of living in such awe-inspiring yet unpredictable environments. This painting is portrait aligned to emphasize a space under, or refers to a sense of fathoms in depth.

Catherine grew up near the Moors and Dales of northern England and attended Art College near London for her BFA. She now lives and works in Austin Texas and London UK. Moving between countries challenges her sense of belonging yet serves as a portal into the greater human experience. Particulars of place and time each become her poetic layering of imagery. Her paintings juxtapose influences of geology with her personal participation in more remote and untamed landscapes of California, Peru, England, Ireland, France and Iceland. After graduating with an MFA from John F Kennedy University, Berkeley Annex, Ca., Catherine was grantee of the Sonoma County Emerging Artist Award. In 2018 her work, "Floeberg" and "Shelf Crack" won her a First Prize award from “Visions Of Science” exhibition at Bath Edge Arts, University Of Bath, England.
