Sonia García's work is characterized by the confrontation between the deliberate and intangible nature of her professional work as a designer and her pictorial work, in which intuition and chance function as the main engines of her inquiries into the subject. The forms and gestures that are revealed throughout her process suggest an approach to the surface of the canvas or paper from intuition. Despite starting to work from an idea that marks the direction of her intentions, instinct seems to dominate most of her actions and decisions in an exercise in which automatism and uncertainty become protagonists. This is how, during the process, the author tries to find answers to the generated forms. However, her intention does not seem to be to give precise answers but rather to formulate new questions with no apparent explanation. The stain, so present in her work, such as in the Reflections series, invites the viewer to interpret these works as if they were Roschard test exercises. Very suggestive forms, generated by chance and with no apparent figurative link, inevitably lead us to search for multiple interpretations of their meaning. However, randomness is not telling us indecision from the author but her attempt to break with the clarity and balance of forms, reflecting on concepts such as uncertainty or the passage of time. When contemplating her work and trying to decipher the motivations behind her decisions, the viewer glimpses how the painter seems to know how it begins but ignores how and when it ends, where the matter of the painting becomes a theme and where the intuitive paths of her hand and her pauses are intuited, which are left as clues on the surface of the canvas, thus, paraphrasing Harold Rosenberg when speaking of the work of the abstract expressionists, what her canvases contain is not an image, but an event, all this is included and expressed in the uncertainty of her gesture.

Sonia García was born in Madrid in 1977 and grew up during the Spanish transition. Daughter of a Peruvian mother and a Spanish father, great-granddaughter of Scottish immigrants, she grows up with her three brothers in a multicultural environment surrounded by works of abstract art, Peruvian tapestries and art books where she discovers the Impressionists. While still a child, it was in the family home that she discovered her vocation for painting and found her first influences. She studied Fine Arts in Madrid specializing above all in engraving techniques. Although her passion is painting, she has devoted herself professionally to design. In 2014 she established her painting studio and currently combines both professions.
