that was my old sofa.
this is called a botarga, which is a suit that people use in carnivals or for marketing. they are very common in Mexico, but you can find them in traditional folk festivities in Spain. I think they are metaphors of our personas, the characters that we build of ourselves.
this fantastic fish and the naked woman have a thing going on. or not and I am just imagining things. something that my mom would not understand: "why does she have to be naked, Cuquita? is that fish about to do something to her?" not sure. what do you think? is this my twisted unconscious, or am I consciously being provocative?
the coast of Oaxaca is a place where black people migrated to, before the independence of Mexico. The mix between Native americans (we called them zapotecos, mixtecos, mixes and many more) and black people is quite rare and they call themselves Afromexicans. My friend, being from Tabasco, which is also where you can find black people in Mexico, feels very much at home there.
the botarga, which is a sort of costume that covers the head and body, is a very regular thing to see in Mexico as promotional resource. It is a tradition that comes from medieval european festivals.

About The Artwork

This is a diptych, two figures independent but together, united by the background. I made this painting after visiting my friend Ingrid in Pinotepa Nacional, in the coast of Oaxaca. this was my first trip, and only one so far, to visit a friend. Not family, just a fellow artist. It was important for me and my mental health. We met in Oaxaca at the Taller Rufino Tamayo, both mothers in the process of building artistic careers after our children have left home. This painting represent the struggle of women artists, their insecurities and strengths. We have each other's back, we support each other in the face of the adversities that we face when starting so late in the game. We laugh and make jokes of our processes and I feel like I needed to honor that friendship.

I am interested in experimenting with sincretic images that capture the whole range of religious experiences. I am inspired by the architecture and mural paintings of the Aztecs, Mayan, Zapotecan and other peoples from America and I like to intersect them with the aesthetics brought to America by the Spanish, like virgins, saints and holy beings. I intersect them with a third paradigm which is my personal journey into Indian philosophies and the idea of enlightenment. The result shows where I am now, believing that art is the way, and being an artist is my religion.
