About The Artwork

In this painting, I was concentrating on the treachery of the hill above the meadows near my studio during winter when it is steep, slippery and disorienting. The painting makes the jeopardy of walking along the hill visual, as your eyes are constantly in danger of falling down the hill and they keep grabbing hold of the trees for support. I was experimenting with colour and technique and ended up making the fallen leaves redder and rawer than they really were and that area almost recalls freshly grazed skin which seemed appropriate in a painting about falling over. The painting is 18"x14" and is on canvas stretched on shallow stretchers. As with all my work it is made entirely from high quality artist-grade materials. It features a small amount of iridescent paint to replicate the way young silver birch trees catch the light. It is unframed.

Alan is an artist based in Surrey. From his studio in Staines-upon-Thames, he paints landscapes, investigates whatever catches his attention and is currently prototyping some top secret & beautiful things. He trained at Farnham and has shown in many open and group shows throughout London and the South East, has had one major solo show and has been artist in residence for a manor house in Buckinghamshire. His work is in many private collections. “A high proportion of my work is the local landscape. Initially this was nothing but a combination of convenience and a long term fascination with the depiction of space, but as I have dug deeper it has begun to act as a proxy for more personal ideas.”
