About The Artwork

In this painting, a young woman poses for a selfie in clown make-up. In the mirror reflecting her image, she is her normal self, no makeup. I chose to paint these two photos because I felt they illustrated a take on Judith Butler's idea of “performing” one’s gender, but with a twist. People are not only performing gender, but performing all kinds of ways of being in the world. Young people “try on” and “perform” these roles or ways of being that are modeled for us on TV and in films. Here, this young woman is trying on ‘funny girl’, but sees her regular, inner self in the mirror.
