Periwinkles illustrate beautifully the evolutionary stages of a marine creature transforming in to one able to live on land. There are 4 species in Cornwall – flat, common, small and rough – they have settled in most of the tidal zones, from the lower shore right up to the splash zone. Each painting begins by painting several coats of gesso on to the surface of the canvas and adding textures using a variety of mixed media. When starting to paint I build layers, starting with Acrylics and then moving on to Oils for their rich depth and purity of colour. The 19th Century Artist, Marianne North’s, intrepid adventures and prolific paintings of botanical specimens fill me with wonder and provide inspiration for a new body of work exploring memory and our emotional response to both place and the patterns and textures of the natural world. The works whilst seemingly devoid of figuration reference a visual poem: attempting to capture through the sensory medium of paint the mood of either the place or a moment in time. Not using visual reference material is essential when making to allow my own emotion and memory to dictate the placing of colour and shape whilst providing space for the viewer to form their own response. Attempting to grasp the feeling before it disintegrates the painting becomes a metaphor for the lived experience.

Having graduated in 2016 with a First Class Honours Degree in Fine Art, I was honoured to have been shortlisted for the National Graduate Award organized by London Art Consultants Artiq and Herbert Smith Freehills. This has resulted in a successful on going relationship with Artiq Art Consultants renting large scale works in the City of London. Exhibiting widely since graduation and shortlisted in January 2019 for the Royal Art Prize with Galleria Pall Mall I have work held by private and corporate collectors both in the UK and Internationally and have undertaken several private commissions .I have also had experience as Artist in Residence with Allenheads Contemporary arts which is based in the dark sky park in Northumbria and am a part of a Mentor Group facilitated by The Newlyn School of Art in Cornwall. In addition to developing my own commercial art practice I am an Associate Artist with Chapel Arts Studios (CAS) which has a collaborative, experimental and community focused ethos. Currently I am teaching at Winchester School of Art on their Contemporary / Alternative History of Art evening course led by Dr August Jordon Davis and Dr Ronda Gowland Pryde in addition to being part of their outreach team offering life drawing to schools. Teaching wise my specific area of interest and one I hope to develop further is facilitating groups in using reflective visual practices to “make sense” of our place within the world.
