This painting is loosely based on a photograph of the Brazilian top model Gisele Bündchen. It deals with the fascination and cult of celebrity and the modern-day obsession with image and labels, especially with respect to women. The religious symbolism is an ironic reference to the way figures such as these are venerated and enshrined by the media and advertising, presenting us with the image of beauty and perfection that we should supposedly aspire to. The format and posture borrowed from the typical Madonna painting includes a double entendre here in the title "Éphémère", referring to both the ephemeral nature of beauty and youth and the glorification of motherhood in Catholic religious imagery. Ironically, variations of the word "mother" are also used in the Latin American context to denote sexual desire towards women. The figure herself, however, seems to question this very notion of "perfect beauty" and object of desire as the graphic quality of the drawing appears to expose the dual identity of painting as both object and illusion. The intended provocative eroticism and desire usually associated with this model now seem to have been tinged with a questioning of the very act of observation and manipulation of the image.

I am a London-born self-taught painter working with a variety of subject matter ranging from sensual renditions of tropical fruits to conceptual Pop paintings and portraits, as well as more abstract work focusing on colour and light. The themes of desire, sensuality, and the exotic and erotic, are all constants in my work, as are the use of irony and humour.
