Pines and Heather - Thursley Painting

I love the open heath land in the south of England, covered in heather, gorse, birch trees and Scots pine trees. This painting is about the moving sunlight and shade patterns on the heather and trees on Thursley Common, a large area of sandy heath land where the heather flourishes and blooms in late summer. Historically, the heath was a dangerous place frequented by cutpurses and highwaymen who preyed on travellers making the journey from London to Portsmouth.
