VIEW IN MY ROOM
Brightly coloured process painting made up of 1cm squares of oil paint applied adjacent to each other in a strict grid pattern. Made up of hundreds of tiny carefully applied squares of contrasting colour blocking this vibrant piece features highly detailed transitions from blue to red to green and yellow etc which viewed from a distance merge into other colours. Inspired by Gerhard Richter's process paintings this abstract work made with oil paint and pallet knife balances vivid colours to create a harmonious whole composition with a contemporary, modern feel. The surface is highly textured with lots of relief coming from the gestural repeated action of building up the paint in each colour block against the still wet paint from the neighbouring colours. From differing angles different colours become dominant or fade away making this a piece that is continually changing based on the type of light, weather and viewpoint. The full spectrum of colours is used and preparation for completing a piece like this involves laborious mixing of the many colours that will subsequently be applied to the canvas to ensure that each colour is highly saturated and pure. Random gatherings of shapes, marks and colours like this often induce in the viewer a phenomenon called pareidolia. The viewer may see all kinds of images concealed and revealed within the image and believe that there are patterns, animals, faces, symbols etc. Viewers of these pieces often ask me why I chose to embed the image of a given celebrity, cartoon or video game character or other symbol or subject. This piece is shipped unframed, wired and ready to hang.

My work includes drawing, painting, print, cyanotype, polaroid and digital photography, image manipulation using a variety of media such as oil, acrylic, pen and ink, pencil, pastel, marker, collage, crayon and found images, maps, charts, texts, books, stencils etc. Previous collections of works have explored themes such as advertising, infantile images and compositions inspired by illustrations in Ladybird books and their relationship to pop art. The enduring appeal of reflective surfaces and shiny objects in a world of mechanised production and the human mind’s tendency to attempt to find order in random or chaotic systems (pareidolia). In my latest series of works the composition of the slide puzzle or eight puzzle is used to obscure, reveal and reconfigure multiple layers of imagery.
