Sometimes during some of the most dangerous and difficult times, it takes daring and courage to do something pleasurable. I was in such a situation when I painted this picture. I felt the immensity of nature and I chose a colour, indigo, to express this. I thought of these little pleasure boats that sail up and down waterways of the world and many of the people in them will be in situations similar to the one I was facing. I thought of Hokusai and Hiroshige and how mountains and waves were at one in challenging a little boat. I wanted to paint my own version of the power of choosing joy. And to me, the twinkling lights on the pleasure boat in this picture are like a constellation of hope. I would love if somehow could experience this picture as a positive sign in their life, of daring to choose pleasure and happiness even in the face of overwhelming odds.
