ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Subject: The painting is a portrayal of the panoramic view of the port of Málaga, as seen from the tower of Gibralfaro Castle. The castle has been a site of fortifications since the Phoenician foundation of Málaga, dating back to around 770 BC. The castle and the hill it sits on are named after the Arabic word, Jbel, meaning rock or mount, and the Greek word, Faro, meaning light, resulting in the name "Rock of Light." Collection Description: Through the exploration of different features of the city, the collection delves into how the landscape has been inhabited and harnessed over time to create place and culture. The paintings are organized into three themes: profit, protection, and pleasure, which have been drivers of the development of the built environment in Málaga. Each painting captures a different aspect of the city, highlighting its unique history and character through variations in composition, perspective, line, geometry, and paint. Process: Plein-air drawing, painted in the studio.
