ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Portia is beautiful, gracious, rich, intelligent, and quick-witted, with a luxury lifestyle and high standards for her potential romantic partners. She is bound by the rules set forth in her father's will, which gives potential suitors the chance to choose between three caskets composed of gold, silver and lead. Although we see Portia as a virtuous, honest young woman, somewhat playful, and with a sense of humour, none of her characteristics play any part in the drama in the sense that Juliet’s or Cleopatra’s or Lady Macbeth’s qualities and personalities are organic to the drama. All we need from Portia is that she be a good lawyer. What kind of person she is, is neither here nor there. Portia’s main claim to fame in the halls of English dramatic literature is that she delivers one of the most famous monologues, filled with some of Shakespeare’s most beautiful poetry, expressing some of the wisest sentiments that exist in any play: "The quality of mercy is not strained". Portia insists on convincing Shylock to be merciful as God is merciful toward us. Portia is every one of us. You might not "feel" as one of the main characters but that is neither here nor there, you still have a voice.

I am a qualified "old method" lead glass artist of ASGLA “The Association of Stained Glass Lamp/Window artists”, with a love for painting. My inspiration comes from a fondness for Elizabethan portraiture, fuelled by my passion for Shakespeare. At the age of 9 my leaning towards the arts were already evident when I attended the local art school, Hugo Naude in a small town in South Africa. From thereon I studied art history till my final year in high school. Shakespeare really became a day and night read when my English teacher introduced us to Othello. As a stained glass artist also specialising in painting figures on glass as in churches , the vision is to paint old masters, obviously not near there, but how I see them in a sort of childlike manner. Most young girls dream of living in a chateau and every room filled with beautiful old timers paintings and stained glass windows. With every painting I feel a sense of accomplishment, getting nearer to the chateau life. My paintings are mostly concerned with the issues of human life, love, loss, desire, friendship and betrayal, all that Shakespeare so loved. I hope that the viewers will see some personality in my work, that the eyes might tell you something of the characters feelings, or invoke some feeling in yourself that brings a smile. My abstract art side is like a weekend breakaway, and it gives me an immense feeling of freedom from the smell and sounds of lead, soldering and stained glass hammers. I hope that this side will also bring that to
