About The Artwork

My eldest son was diagnosed with depression a few years ago, and in 2015-2016 we went through the soul destroying process of claiming ESA for him as his doctor had said he is not fit for work, and we needed an income to continue to afford to live. Due to cuts to welfare and mental health, this was a terrifying and uncertain process made worse by being forced to go through the appeals process. For further reference, see I, Daniel Blake. The appeal was upheld in court, and my son was awarded ESA in March 2016. Shortly after this, Iain Duncan Smith, the DWP secretary, resigned from his position. "Portrait Of Ian Duncan Smith With Bandaged Nose" was the first work I'd been able to do after becoming a carer for someone with a mental health condition. It is a portrait of Iain Duncan Smith, after Van Gogh's "Self Portrait With Bandaged Ear" - the metaphor is a response to cuts - to cut off your nose to spite your face. Van Gogh is obviously known for suffering from mental illness, however, here, Iain Duncan Smith is depicted in the same way by someone that does not suffer from mental illness, but who experiences it through a caring role. A role that is undervalued, unpaid, and unsupported. It expresses the pure insanity of the current system relating to welfare and mental health cuts caused by Iain Duncan Smith and his successors under the current government. It follows along paintings such as The Ambassadors by Holbein, in depicting someone in power in a truthful and critical manner. Iain is deliberately misspelt with one "I". It was selected to be exhibited at the Institute Of Mental Health in Nottingham between May and October 2016, however, it is still available for sale.
