ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I wanted to paint this face as it came to me whilst I etched out the features with gesso first, which is a white chalk. I knew the paint would look great on it especially as I wanted a wash of white to bounce of the magenta, here I wanted to give the face a light wash of gold (I can be heavy). To me this enables my process to give a look which might perhaps be ancient but also up to the minute.

Mark Baldwin is a dancer and multi media artist specialising in Painting and it's relationship to Choreography. Former Artistic Director Rambert Dance Company London from 2002-2018. He was born in the British Colony of Fiji. As a young child his Fijian mother took him with her to the ballet which she loved. At Art School he fell in love with the American Abstract Expressionists and the work they were doing with the great American choreographer Merce Cunningham and the composer John Cage. The scholarship he won in his first year at art school paid for the extensive training he undertook to become a highly trained dancer. Today Mark Baldwin makes lush often paired down paintings. They take the viewer into a world of a shapes which to him represent the human body, curving or bending into the picture space. The paintings go beyond the body evoking moods, gardens, sunlight and stories. He works between London and Silves in the Algarve Portugal. The paintings exist in time and space changing with the light. They represent a life time of work. The struggle for perfection and musicality, they carry memories and experiences pulled from the black hole of creativity. Presently he is Academic Visitor University of Cambridge in the Department of Psychology working with Professor Nicola Clayton FRS. The give lectures and demonstration on the nature of creativity, perception and Mental Time Travel.
