About The Artwork

In my humble opinion, there are five giants of contemporary art. In alphabetical order they are: Francis Bacon Lucien Freud David Hockney Pablo Picasso Andy Warhol These five painters have dominated western painting since World War Two. Their status as hugely influential artists is demonstrated by two main factors: 1 The influence they have had on the direction of art, or, in other words, the stylistic impact they’ve had on their peers. 2 Their paintings have changed the way we look at art. But how can this be assessed? There are numerous measures, but here is one yardstick applied to each of them. Who can look at a portrait of a cardinal without seeing a mental image of Bacon’s 1951 series of screaming popes? Any contemporary nude portrait can’t help but be compared with Lucien Freud’s confronting naked models with their “in your face” genitalia. How can anyone ever look as a swimming pool without conjuring up a mental image of Hockney’s “Bigger Splash”? Pablo Picasso is probably leader of the pack. He’s a household name alongside Rembrandt and Michelangelo. His cubist period, his highly personal interpretations of many historical paintings, his abstract work and his surrealist period, have all had a significant impact of the art of the day. And on the art of the years that followed these famous works. They changed the direction of the flow of art and are simply unforgettable and Just the mention of Marilyn Monroe or Elizabeth Taylor brings to mind, not their movies, press or publicity photographs, but Andy Warhol’s large silkscreen paintings of these famous actresses. With all this in mind, I’ve decided to start on a series of portraits of these major artists. Here is David Hockney in front of one of his swimming pool paintings.

Bonjour. I'm Ray Johnstone, and I live in a small medieval village in south west France. I spend most of my time painting, writing and teaching art, but I still find time to play petanque most afternoons (the game they play with iron balls all over France). I firmly believe that everyone - yes, everyone - can learn to paint and draw, and I teach children and adults, as well as individuals, families and groups. (For more information about art holidays, simply cut and paste the following: ’Ray Johnstone France’). If you’d like a quote on any painting you might like to think about commissioning me to do, please email me the details. (Please keep in mind that I can paint almost any subject FROM A PHOTOGRAPH). I’ll get back to you right away.
