ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Watching a potter at work at the wheel, shaping a lump of clay into something beautiful is a cathartic experience. In this watercolor painting, I focus on the skilled hands of a potter in action, shaping and creating a vessel from clay on the pottery wheel as an attempt to give a glimpse into the tactile and intricate process of pottery creation. The hands, weathered by experience, convey a sense of expertise and dedication that comes from years of mastering the craft. I love monochrome and also feel that the grayscale palette lends a classic and timeless feel to the craft as well as the painting, and the absence of color helps to focus our attention on the hands' firm yet gentle grip on the clay and the finesse with which they shape its form. They embody a sense of connection between the artist and their creation. This is the first of a series of paintings featuring hands. Reference photo credits to Quino Al on Unsplash.

Anjuna Sainath is a watercolor artist, originally from India and now based in sunny Singapore. She is an ex-IT professional and a homemaker and started her art journey in 2014 after her elder one started primary school. She has explored various art media, beginning with pencils, color pencils and charcoals, moving on to oils and pastels before discovering watercolors which is now her preferred medium. The lightness and fluidity of the medium and the painting process is what enthralls her. Her knowledge gained so far has been through self-exploration, art books/videos and articles and also interactions with expert artists and their guidance at hobby classes. She is inspired by nature and human life. The play of light, moods or emotions in a scene push her to paint it. Her style is evolving, while trying to add more of the characteristics of water into her paintings. You may find here artworks that were done a few years ago with a different approach, and also recent ones, along with experimental works.
